The MTHFR gene

Alright, let’s talk about something most of you guys, and girls have never even heard of, but it could be silently holding back your energy, performance, and even your gains/weight loss.

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right… Training hard, eating clean, but still hitting walls?

Energy crashes mid-day?

Pumps aren’t what they should be?

Mood is up, down, and all around?

Not gaining, or dropping much weight?

Libido…… …… …… mmhmmm – I hear it all time.

It might not be your life style, age, training or diet. It could be a hidden genetic bottleneck.

The MTHFR Handbrake!!!

The MTHFR gene (short for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) provides instructions for making an enzyme that’s crucial in how your body processes folate (vitamin B9) and converts homocysteine (a potentially harmful amino acid) into methionine, which your body uses for growth and repair.

Around 40% of the population has the common genetic variation called MTHFR – that makes it harder for their bodies to convert regular B vitamins, like standard folic acid and B12, into the active forms your system actually uses.

Think of it like trying to fuel a high-performance engine with low-grade gas.

Your body struggles to unlock the full power of these essential nutrients.

What does this mean for you?

  • Subpar Nitric Oxide (NO) Production: Your body needs active B vitamins (specifically methylfolate) to optimize the pathways that create NO. Less Nitric Oxide means weaker blood flow.
  • Compromised Blood Flow: Weaker blood flow impacts everything – nutrient delivery to muscles (slower gains), waste removal (slower recovery), energy levels, focus, and bedroom performance.
  • Energy & Mood Dips: These B vitamins are crucial for energy metabolism and neurotransmitter production. If you can’t utilize them efficiently, energy and mood can suffer.

It’s a hidden handbrake that could be slowing you down without you even knowing it.

The two most studied MTHFR gene mutations are:

  1. C677T
  2. A1298C

People can inherit these from one or both parents. Depending on the variant and combination, it can reduce the enzyme’s activity by 30–70%, potentially leading to issues like:

  • Poor detoxification
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Mood disorders
  • Miscarriage or fertility problems

Core Supplements for MTHFR Support:

1. Methylated B Vitamins (Activated B-Complex)

  • Why: These are already in the form your body needs—no conversion required.
  • Look for:
    • Methylfolate (5-MTHF or L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate)
    • Methylcobalamin (active B12)
    • P5P (active B6)
    • Riboflavin (B2) – supports the MTHFR enzyme

2. Trimethylglycine (TMG) or Betaine

  • Why: Helps recycle homocysteine into methionine (alternative methylation pathway).
  • Often paired with methylated B vitamins in good formulas.

3. Magnesium

  • Why: Supports over 300 enzyme reactions, including ones related to methylation.

4. Zinc + Selenium

  • Why: These trace minerals support detoxification and proper gene expression.

5. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) or Glutathione

  • Why: Supports detox pathways and helps neutralize oxidative stress, which can be higher with MTHFR mutations.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)

  • Why: Anti-inflammatory and supports brain, cardiovascular, and overall cell function.

These aren’t your standard supplements, or cheap B vitamins though.

These are the bioavailable, ready-to-use forms. They completely bypass that MTHFR conversion roadblock.

It’s like giving your body direct access to the nutrients it needs.

What This Means for Your Results

When you bypass that bottleneck with these supplements, especially the B vitamin’s:

  • Optimized Nitric Oxide: Your body can produce Nitric Oxide more efficiently, leading to significantly better blood flow.
  • Insane Pumps & Vascularity: Experience fuller, harder muscle pumps during your workouts because blood is surging where it needs to go.
  • Enhanced Nutrient Delivery: Better blood flow means more oxygen, amino acids, and other growth factors getting shuttled directly into your muscle tissue. This supports faster muscle growth and better recovery.
  • Improved Fat Loss Potential: Efficient blood flow helps mobilize fatty acids and clear metabolic waste, creating a better environment for fat burning.
  • Sustained Energy & Focus: Proper B vitamin utilization supports cellular energy production, fighting fatigue and keeping you dialed in.

Remember this isn’t just about a temporary boost. It’s about fixing a potential underlying issue that impacts nearly half the population, ensuring your body is functioning optimally, and always performing at its best!

I hate talking about stuff that actually isn’t physically in my hands, or life, but if you’re reading this far you’re part of the 1%. With that you know i am part of the 1%, and most things i set out to do, or say, I rarely miss. But I believe I’ve come up with one of the best blood flow formula’s out there, and I cant wait to share it with you. Adding these methylated B vitamins to my stack 9 months ago just took it to another level.

So if you’ve felt like something’s been “off” with your energy or performance, this could be the missing piece. Get tested, and if you have the MTHFR mutation (especially C677T or A1298C), the key is to support methylation and reduce homocysteine levels.

Make sure to Avoid:

  • Folic Acid (the synthetic form—especially in cheap multivitamins or fortified foods)
  • Cyanocobalamin (synthetic B12)
  • Over-supplementing without guidance—too much methylfolate can cause anxiety, irritability, or insomnia in some people.

I hope this helps you unlock your full potential.

And feel the difference optimal B vitamins make.

Stay dangerous, and well see you in the arena!
